Album Notes

Makrokosma Bali is performed by the twenty-five musicians of Sekaa Gong Taruna Mekar, the famed gamelan ensemble from Bali, under the direction of I Made Arnawa. This compact disc contains a selection of music from the fully staged work, premiered at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco on May 13-15, 2011, as part of the exhibition Bali: Art, Ritual, Performance – the most ambitious presentation of Balinese arts in US history.at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. The staged piece combined new music for gamelan orchestra with projected video and still imagery, ambient sounds, and lighting design in an integrated set, realized by a team of US-based visual, audio, and software artists. Conceived and directed by Wayne Vitale, Makrokosma Bali is an exploration of fundamental themes of Bali-Hindu philosophy and cosmology, contrasted with perspectives from outside of Bali.

Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6 recorded on February 8-9, 2011 in the Pura Dalem Munduk Sangkur temple of Tunjuk.
